Diabetes Diets: Achieving
Results
A diabetic is not able to eat like everyone else is. A person
who does not have to live with diabetes can eat whatever meals they
like, whenever they choose to. Unfortunately a diabetic has to
watch what they eat and when they eat. The whole purpose of diabetes diets is to achieve and
maintain the right weight for the person in order to help keep the
blood glucose levels at the right place.
Getting and keeping a normal blood glucose level helps to
prevent a lot of conditions that plague diabetics, such as heart
disease and circulatory problems. People who do not take care of
their body when they have diabetes risk hospitalization for the
resulting problems that can occur from the constantly changing
sugar levels. The tricky thing is that diabetes diets are different
for every person. A diabetes diet will differ for every person, as
it has a lot to do with the amount of exercise you get, and how
your individual body reacts to your health condition.
There is no one diet that a diabetic has to follow. If only it
were so easy! Many diabetics wish that their doctor or dietitian
could give them a menu to follow for the month in order to keep
their sugars regulated, but, unfortunately, they cannot. While they
can make some great food suggestions, in most cases, they won't
give you a specific menu to follow, nor will they come to your
house to help you prepare that food. This may cause a bit of
frustration on your part. These ideas, though, should help.
There are some basic rules that most diabetes diets recommend.
Eat smaller, more frequent meals rather than eating one or two
big meals a day. This is why a lot of diabetes diets fail. The diet
instructs that the person has a small breakfast and two large
meals, avoiding snacks all together. In reality, a diabetic should
try to keep their blood sugar regulated throughout the entire day,
which means eating small snacks as well as having regular meal
times.
Substitute whole grains for the typical carbohydrates that you
eat. This can help your blood sugar levels to stay more stable.
Exercise at least once per day. Try to find an exercise plan
that you love to ensure you'll stick with it as time goes by.
These rules, though, can be difficult to follow. For example, it
can be difficult in this busy day and age to have regular meal
times. This is because we all run so often that it is unlikely we
are sitting down to eat more than once or twice a week! Almost all
diabetes diets recommend that
diabetics have regularly timed meals, in order to keep the sugar on
an even keel. One way to do that is to have your meals delivered
right to you.
