Compulsive Eating Habits: Are You Hungry, Or Just Filling A Void?

Compulsive Eating Habits

Compulsive eating habits are a form of eating disorder that is common to kids and adults in the United States. The National Institute of Mental Health has recorded a 5-10 percent increase in the number of people suffering from this condition in recent years. Compulsive eating is a major issue that keeps on increasing. The dilemma is this: are you actually hungry, or are you trying to fill a void?

Think back on the last time you had a snack. Was it needed, or just wanted? Most people will say that the snack was needed, which is common. The meaningful question is how frequent are these “needed” snacks occurring? Compulsive eating is a sneaky predicament. Watching TV, breaks at school, or work, or simply just being bored, are moments that are common to overindulge with food.

You tell yourself you just need a nibble on something without noticing you’re devouring an entire meal’s worth of food. If it were healthy there wouldn’t be much of a concern, but the fact of the matter is that the majority of people grab junk food. A fast food restaurant, packaged cakes, candy, chips, and many other quick treats are examples of things commonly eaten while snacking.

Personally, I am a victim of compulsive eating. There are occasions when I have consumed food when I wasn’t exactly hungry. I have taught myself to set limits on my snacking, and have begun eating a steady meal plan. The objective is to refrain before it’s too late.

When most people realize they have weight problem they turn to quick fix solutions, and can even develop conditions such as anorexia or bulimia. These crucial decisions can have severe emotional and physical consequences. There is always an alternative. For example, starting a nutrition plan, or joining a recovery program that will not only help physically but works towards recuperating the spirit as well, can be highly beneficial. Reconsider your choices the next time you’re craving a snack. Are you willing to do what it takes to shake your compulsive eating habits?
