100 Calorie Packs: Trick or Treat?
We Asked Our Dietitian to Dish on 100 Calorie Packs.
What could be better than 100 calorie packs of your favorite treat? A serving of Oreos in an individual bag—you’re not even tempted to overindulge. Are they a sweet treat or a sugary trick? Our expert dietitian says: TRICK.
100 calorie packs are normally made up of a lot of sugar and processed ingredients. They taste good at the time but they won’t keep you happy for long. Without protein or healthy fats, you’ll be searching for another 100 calories in the next half hour.
It’s important to choose snacks that satisfy your appetite; otherwise you’ll be snacking nonstop all day long.
So what’s a better choice to make when hunger strikes?
Lowfat string cheese is a great alternative that will keep you feeling full longer. For a sweeter option, celery with a tablespoon of reduced fat peanut butter will do the trick.
At snacktime, reach for treats not only with a small amount of calories but also with ingredients that hold you over until mealtime.
If it helps, prepackage your own portions so you’re not tempted to keep snacking mindlessly. Put the right amount in a bag or on a plate and then put the rest away. Out of sight, out of mind.
If you have a question for our dietician, email her at dietician@bistromd.com. Happy snacking!
